Fluid-porous-media Interaction and Musical Acoustics

In this research, acoustic properties of the porous media such as flow resistivity, porosity, tortuosity and characteristic lengths are studied with rigid and elastic frames. The research focus is on equivalent fluid models with an interest in uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis to investigate the reproducibility of measurements using an impedance tube. Commercial software finite element modeling is also being implemented on scaled models of porous samples, taking into account thermal and viscous losses coupled with pressure acoustics.

Ferina Saati is also interested in modal analysis of musical instruments. She has studied the mode shapes of a family of membrane string instruments both experimentally and numerically and continues to assist the instrument makers with providing scientific guideline.
